Shisha Is As Dangerous As Cigarette – FDA Cautions Users

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says the smoking of shisha is as bad as smoking a cigarette, disputing the perception that the tobacco in shisha is flavoured and passes through water before consumption.

Mr George Mensah, a Senior Regulatory Officer of the FDA, who debunked the assertion, said shisha contained carcinogens and nicotine and for that matter, a regular shisha smoker was at risk of similar health problems faced by cigarette smokers.

Addressing students of the St. Louis Senior High School in Kumasi, as part of a public sensitization on the use of tobacco by the Ashanti Regional Office of the FDA, Mr Mensah said the volume of smoke in an hour-long shisha session was estimated to be equivalent to smoking between 100 and 200 cigarettes.

The public sensitization exercise aimed at protecting the youth from the devastating health, social, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco consumption

It forms part of efforts to provide a framework for tobacco control measures to be implemented at the national, regional and international levels to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke.
“Exposure to the ultra-fine particles inhibits blθθd vessels to get larger when they need to and makes platelets sticky, which leads to more heart attacks,” Mr Mensah said.

He said there was no safe form of tobacco use, saying that “tobacco, whether smoked, chewed or sniffed contains nicotine which is highly addictive and deadly.”

Tobacco, he said, contained about 7,000 toxic chemicals, 70 of which could cause cancer.

He mentioned curiosity, peer pressure, family history, anger and boredom as some of the factors that influenced the decision of most people to smoke and urged the students to stay away from tobacco to safeguard their health.

They should not succumb to peer pressure but stay focused on their education, adding that smoking could only ruin their future.

And it’s sad how they think it’s harmless compared to cigarettes. I went out with a girl sometime ago to some coded club house at Tantra Hill, few minute after we sat down she told me to order for shisha for our table, then I jokingly replied “why not order for a cigarette instead” she told me s3 “oh abi shisha is not harmful as compared to cigarettes” she vaped like 2 hours straight. That’s almost 400 sticks of cigarettes but she still thought it was harmless. :joy::joy:

Like I couldn’t see her clearly behind the shisha and all I could see was smoke until she stopped. I never knew shisha competition was being held in Ghana intil I saw that lady. :joy::joy:

I have some questions about smoking. Aside the health implications in smoking, what’s the fun of doing it? What will be gained after smoking? I’ve received a lot of answers to these questions but I’m not satisfied enough. I keep on asking these questions because I don’t understand why the labels on the cigarette packages explain the dangers associated with smoking and people still go in for it. What’s driving these people, I still don’t understand.

To them, it’s a necessary evil. They know the dangers associated with smoking but they do it anyways.

@Paa_Jaylo some people smoke all in the name of having fun , others too smoke to release stress and other also do smoke because their friends are doing it and she also want to taste how it feels like… These are some of the ways people get entangled in smoking. Even though they know the side effect in doing it

There’s also one thing a don’t understand… Why can’t the government put a stop to all this? And its been ungraded as time goes on … Now it has been ungraded from cigarettes to shisha… And a different thing will come up as life goes on.

The government can do little or nothing about smoking. I heard of cases where smoking of tobacco is prescribed for patients at the hospitals. I don’t know how true though. Either way, the smokers should know better.

As to whatever the reason is, everyone of us have control over their lives and you can choose to do whatever you think it’s best for you. I have some friends who do smoke weed and I’ve sat with them whiles they are smoking it and it never did influence me or got my attention to try it out. Everyone have their own reason for doing that and as to whether it’s a good or bad reason, it’s their own cup of tea.
