Richard Commey calls out Devin Haney

Richard Commey

Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight champion, Richard Commey, has called out Devin Haney to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) title against him.

Commey, who last fought in February this year, asked the American to talk to his managers to facilitate a bout between them by the close of the year.

The 34-year-old Ghanaian was responding to a comment by Haney on his Twitter page which said, “This will be the first time in history that you see two mandatories opt out to fight the champion.

“I’m the most avoided fighter in boxing today.”

However, in a response to Haney’s Twitter account, Commey said the American can talk to his managers to arrange a fight with him if he indeed wanted to make a return as soon as possible.

“No problem, I’m next in line so get your people to contact my promoter, Lou DiBella, and let’s get it on.

“How can that be when you’re avoiding me?” Commey asked.

It is, however unclear, whether the 22-year-old undefeated American will decide to take on Commey after refusing to respond to Commey’s challenge.

Commey last destroyed Jackson Marinez in seven rounds on his ring return after losing his IBF lightweight belt to Teofimo Lopez in December 2019.

On his part, Haney successfully defended his title against former World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion with a unanimous decision win in May.
