Abramovich could swap Chelsea for Goztepe

Roman Abramovich has reportedly opened talks to buy the Turkish club Goztepe, which comes against the backdrop of him trying to sell Chelsea.

The billionaire put Chelsea up for sale at the start of March before being sanctioned by the UK government due to his ties with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

According to the Turkish newspaper Fanatik, talks are underway between Abramovich’s representatives and Mehmet Sepil, the owner of Goztepe, who play in the Turkish Super Lig.

Fanatik state that the next round of negotiations will take place over the coming days as the two parties look to reach an agreement.

It comes after Mehmet Sepil announced that he would be leaving Goztepe at the end of this season.

Sanctions against Abramovich

On March 12, Abramovich was disqualified as Chelsea director after the sanctions were imposed on him by the UK government.

“Following the sanctions by the UK government, the Premier League board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a director of Chelsea Football Club,” read the Premier League statement.

“The board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures.”
